About Anderson Clinic Post-Graduate Medical Education Foundation
Anderson Clinic Post-Graduate Medical Education Foundation is a non-profit organization that offers a one-year clinical fellowship in adult total joint reconstruction (4 positions). Founded in 1983, the program stresses clinical evaluation of primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty patients, surgical reconstruction, and postoperative management. Fellows become proficient in routine and complex primary hip and knee arthroplasty, as well as revision arthroplasty. Fellows are exposed to a multitude of reconstructive options, surgical approaches, and arthroplasty implants (using implants from the four major manufacturers) while rotating three months with each attending.

Dr. Andy Engh specializes in joint replacement of the hip and knee, including complex revision surgery. He is a member of The Hip Society and The Knee Society and a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. Dr. Andy is committed to furthering the knowledge and techniques of hip and knee replacement. He has received multiple awards including: the John Charnley Award, three Lawrence D. Dorr Awards, the AAHKS Clinical Award, the James A. Rand Award, as well as the OREF CCJR Award. He has published over 100 articles. He speaks both nationally on topics regarding hip and knee replacement with focus on patient outcomes and analysis of implant function.
Dr. William Hamilton, a native of Ithaca, New York, is a fellowship trained specialist in the field of hip and knee reconstruction, and one of the leading joint replacement surgeons in the country. Because his practice is exclusively hip & knee replacement, he has a keen understanding of the intricacies and complexities involved in these surgeries and has performed over 10,000 hip and knee replacements.
He travels far and wide to lecture and consult on topics involving joint replacement and has several ongoing research studies in this area. He’s published well over 100 articles on topics related to hip and knee replacement. He was a regional pioneer of the anterior approach to total hip arthroplasty, a muscle sparing approach that leads to less postoperative pain and an accelerated recovery. He has performed thousands of these procedures, trained hundreds of surgeons the technique, and published numerous articles on anterior approach.
Most importantly, listening to and getting to know his patients is his top priority. “A successful replacement is more than just knowing how to put the implants in correctly, it’s anticipating and responding to the needs of your patient. I’m proud to be part of a practice and joint replacement center that strives to do this everyday.” Dr. Hamilton maintains involvement in several local and national societies including being a member of both the prestigious hip and knee societies. Dr. Hamilton enjoys Golf and Travel, and spends most of his leisure time with his wife, Beth, and 3 children.
Dr. Hamilton is proud to be a team leader of Operation Walk Virginia, a charitable organization that provides hip and knee replacements to needy patients in central and south America.
Dr. Kevin Fricka is a fellowship trained surgeon and has presented numerous scientific papers and has won several awards for his research efforts. He has been published in the Journal of Arthroplasty and other scientific orthopaedic journals, co-authored several book chapters and is a member of both the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
Dr. Fricka was one of the first INOVA orthopaedic surgeons to perform outpatient partial knee replacement. He also performs partial knee replacements in an outpatient surgical center. Dr. Fricka’s surgical expertise and interests include partial knee replacement, “minimally invasive” knee and hip replacement and the more complex revision or second surgery of failed knee and hip replacements. He has a strong surgical interest and research interest in cementless partial and total knee replacements
Dr. Craig McAsey is an Anderson Clinic fellowship trained surgeon who completed his training in 2012. He specializes in primary and revision total hip and knee arthroplasty including anterior approach hip arthroplasty, as well as partial and total knee arthroplasty using both conventional and robotic arm assistance. Particular areas of interest include complex hip and knee, infection, revision for failed total joint arthroplasty and post-traumatic arthritis.
Dr. McAsey spent his initial four years in practice training orthopaedic residents at Loyola University Medical Center and the Hines VA Hospital before returning to Anderson Clinic. Research interests include biomechanical research in arthroplasty as well as medical
optimization in arthroplasty. He has made a point of prioritizing the fellowship experience and has been awarded “Instructor of the Year” honors numerous times since arriving in 2017.
Dr. Bob Sershon is an Anderson Clinic trained surgeon specializing in bikini-incision anterior total hip replacement, kinematic knee replacement, and outpatient joint replacement. His expertise allows him to serve as a referral source for complex and revision joint replacements.
Dr. Sershon is a dedicated researcher. He has received national recognition and multiple honors for his work in joint replacement, including awards and support from the prestigious Knee Society and Hip Society. An active member in several local and national organizations, he has been invited to present his research across the country and has published over 100 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and abstracts.
In his free time, Dr. Sershon enjoys trail running, playing sports with his kids, and recreational archery/firearms. He is married with a daughter and two sons.
