Opportunities for Specialized Training & Research

The Joint Replacement Fellowship with the Anderson Orthopaedic Institute offers comprehensive training in total hip replacement and knee replacement surgery and affords opportunities for research with Anderson Clinic Doctors Charles A. Engh, Sr., Gerard A. Engh, C. Anderson Engh, and James P. McAuley (see bios).

Under the auspices of The Anderson Clinic Post-Graduate Medical Education Foundation, this fellowship is located at the shared facilities of the Anderson Orthopaedic Clinic and the Anderson Orthopaedic Research Institute (AORI). These facilities share a medical campus with the INOVA Mt. Vernon Hospital, located in Alexandria, Virginia, approximately 20 miles south of Washington, DC.

Overall Description

Four fellowship positions are available each year. The fellowship commences on August 1 and covers 12 consecutive months of service, which consist of four three-month rotations: Hip Service under Dr. Charles A. Engh, Sr.; Knee Service under Dr. Gerard A. Engh, Joint Service under Dr. C. Anderson Engh; and Joint Service under Dr. James P. McAuley.

The fellow is involved in the pre-, intra-, and postoperative management of joint replacement patients, as well as research through AORI research facilities.

Educational Goals & Activities

Surgeons in this fellowship develop a thorough understanding of cementless hip implant design, surgical expertise in primary and revision hip and knee replacement surgery, new techniques, such as minimally invasive unicompartmental knee surgery. Preoperative planning is stressed. In the research area, Fellows gain analytical skills with respect to the radiographic and clinical evaluation of long-term clinical results in a scientific manner. Our educational goals are supported by biweekly patient management conferences, weekly journal discussions, quarterly teaching conferences at the Anderson Orthopaedic Clinic, and a national orthopaedic conference.

Research Goals &
Activities

Each fellow is expected to complete one or more research projects suitable for publication in a peer-review journal. We encourage Fellows to submit abstracts of these research projects to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons

AORI fellows perform research in five major areas:

1. Assessing the performance of implant designs for primary and revision hip arthroplasty, particularly cementless femoral and acetabular designs.

2. Evaluation of post mortem-retrieved specimens to increase knowledge of changes occurring to periprosthetic bone and implants.

3. Investigation of implant designs for primary and revision knee surgery, including unicompartmental knee replacements.

4. Long-term clinical outcome studies on total joint replacement.

5. Research outcomes of surgical techniques and investigate complications.

Research Resources: Fellows have access to the computerized clinical database and radiographic archives of Anderson Clinic hip and knee replacement patients. The hip and knee databases and radiographic archives are unsurpassed in total joint arthroplasty in terms of volume of patients and the longevity and completeness of patient followup. The Fellows are also supported by AORI's research laboratory, engineering and statistical staff, photographic capabities, and by Inova Mt. Vernon Hospital's library services.

Clinical Duties

Fellows assist in the care of all patients admitted by Dr. Charles A. Engh, Dr. Gerard A. Engh, Dr. C. Andy Engh, and Dr. James McAuley to Mt. Vernon Hospital. Fellows see preoperative and postoperative patients in the Anderson Clinic, assist in surgery, and see hospitalized patients daily. Each fellow will serve on both the hip service and on the knee service. Rotations are subject to change. Fellows also share on-call responsibilities.

Opportunities for international orthopaedic residents

Recently, Anderson Clinic began two other fellowships specifically for international orthopaedists in their residencies. These fellowships do not involve medical care. A one-year international research fellowship on cementless total hip arthroplasty is available with Dr. Charles Engh. A 3-month fellowship is available to Japanese orthopaedists, which involves observing clinical practices and surgery. Fellows in both programs participate in case discussions, journal reading conferences, and quarterly educational conferences. For more information, call (703) 619-4411or email research@aori.org.
