Each fellow is expected to complete one or more research projects suitable for publication in a peer-review journal. We encourage Fellows to submit abstracts of these research projects to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
AORI fellows perform research in five major areas:
- Assessing the performance of implant designs for primary and revision hip arthroplasty, particularly cementless femoral and acetabular designs.
- Evaluation of post mortem-retrieved specimens to increase knowledge of changes occurring to periprosthetic bone and implants.
- Investigation of implant designs for primary and revision knee surgery, including unicompartmental knee replacements.
- Long-term clinical outcome studies on total joint replacement.
- Research outcomes of surgical techniques and investigate complications.

Research Resources: Fellows have access to the computerized clinical database and radiographic archives of Anderson Clinic hip and knee replacement patients. The hip and knee databases and radiographic archives are unsurpassed in total joint arthroplasty in terms of volume of patients and the longevity and completeness of patient followup. The Fellows are also supported by AORI's research laboratory, engineering and statistical staff, photographic capabities, and by Inova Mt. Vernon Hospital's library services.
